Don’t Bite the hand that feeds you!
From a young age most of us are taught to treat people the way you would like to be treated and to show respect at all times but I fear that this simple philosophy is disappearing faster than we care to admit.
A very professional recruiter, whom I have worked alongside and have the utmost respect for, who is the sort of person who treats his clients and candidates with great respect and offers as much help and assistance as humanly possible, often at his own time and cost showed me a candidate response to a very well thought out and helpful job application decline letter.
Now, most people are disappointed when they don’t get an interview for a job but the majority are aware that, particularly in a tight job market, Yes there is a job shortage again!, they have to compete again the masses for every job they go for. And more often than not they don’t even get a response.
So what was interesting, and I use the word interesting when I want to say ‘disgusting’ was that after this well thought out response offering genuine feedback as well as a solution was told in no uncertain terms that he was unprofessional, a bottom feeder and to F*Off!!!!!
REALLY! What is wrong with some people, firstly NEVER respond to a job advertisement like that, the recruiter, and anyone else they speak to will never consider you again and secondly don’t take your frustrations out on others who are trying to help, one day you might really need them. The advice that was given was to benefit the applicant and could have given him exactly what he needed to have a better chance in the future.
The sad fact is that there are hundreds of resumes for each job and very few give a clear outline of what the person has actually done, let alone demonstrate how they are suitable for the job they are applying for. Recruiters are not able to guess and assume based on your previous employment that you have what is being asked for, a manager in one company may have completely different responsibilities to one in another company so it is up to you to spell it out, explain your role and what you did. You need to do the work, not just send the same resume you have tacked on to and used for years for every, and any, job advertised. It’s the ones who know the skills to applying for a job that get the interview and let’s be honest, if your resume appears sloppy and lazy then don’t you think that is the perception they will have of you?
